Faber Castell

The Company

Faber Castell have been producing pencils since 1761, although it wasn’t until 1840, some 79 years later, that the pencils were marked with the Faber name by Lothar von Faber. By doing so, Lothar produced the worlds first branded writing instrument. He also established standards for length, diameter and lead hardness.

In 1889, when Baroness Ottilie von Faber married the wonderfully named Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, the famous Faber-Castell name was born. Faber-Castell are now the leading producer of wood-cased graphite and colour pencils in the world.

The environment is extremely important to the company and they have recently been awarded a forestry commission certificate following a successful reforestation project. Projects like these assure a sustainable supply of Timber without damaging precious natural resources.
