Last night my house in Richmond was broken into it. That may not be newsworthy, but I can honestly say it was one if the scariest moments of my life. I won’t go into all the details, but the front door was forced while we were asleep, and I awoke to find someone in my bedroom going through my jewellery.

We are insured, so the lost items can be replaced. But I can’t easily replace the feeling of security; having a stranger see me naked and vulnerable has destroyed that. It’s a feeling I never want to experience again.

Now I want to say I have massive respect for all of the emergency services. Our doctors, nurses, fire brigade, and police are a source of pride despite their lack of funding. So I am not apportioning blame when I say that no officers or detectives have visited in the 18 hours since and I don’t even know if they will.

So who was the hero in our hour of need? It was a local locksmith from Richmond. Not only did they pay an early morning visit to secure the premises for us and replace the lock. But they then came back at a more reasonable hour to complete a security audit of our property to give us invaluable peace of mind.

Locksmiths are often overlooked in discussions about personal security, but this is my opportunity to wax lyrical about their importance. These skilled professionals play a crucial role in safeguarding our homes, businesses, and communities.
