The UK is full of spectacular cities and destinations that will give a much-needed break for every type of traveller. For some, plane travel is incredibly stressful so staying inside the UK eliminates that. We’ve recently covered some ideas for day trip destinations in under 2 hours by train, and here’s some a bit further away for a weekend or more.

We’ve picked places that are easily explored on foot. Here’s our pick of the best UK getaways to book in 2024 that are easily accessible by train from London.

Cambridge

okay so this is day trip worthy too, but Cambridge has been the setting for many films and television shows, and it is easy to see why you should visit for longer than 24 hours. The awe-inspiring spires, cloisters and cobbles are there to be explored. If the weather is on your side, why not enjoy a picnic by the river as you watch people punting along (main image)?

If you are looking for a bit of a hidden gem, head over to David Parr House. This ordinary-looking terraced house is home to an exquisite hand-painted interior by the artist David Parr.

You can get the train to Cambridge from Kings Cross in under an hour, with a regular service.

We added this to our day trip list as it takes just 1 hr 20 minutes direct from Paddington, but it’s so worth a weekender.

Bath is famous for its impressive Roman Baths which are an incredibly well-preserved example of Roman architecture. With over 2,000 years of history to explore, this is an adventure that will last the whole day.

Bath is such an easily accessible city. If you don’t want the stress of driving, why not book in advance and get the train? If you have young kids, this can be an exciting part of the holiday too!

If Scotland has always been a place that has interested you, then a good starting place is a weekend in Edinburgh. This city is full of history and places of interest. Wherever you are in the city, you can always see two of the most famous sights: Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat.

Arthur’s Seat was once a volcano and sits at 251 metres above sea level. Atop the hill is a fort that looks as though it has been frozen in time. The surrounding parkland, Holyrood Park, has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diversity of the flora and fauna found there.

While you can get a direct train from Kings Cross, it’s a 4 hour 20 minute journey so a long weekend gives you better value.

Durham is the ideal city for an adult-only break which would allow you to soak in the rich culture all around. Dominated by the Romanesque cathedral, Durham is perfect for wandering through the winding streets and finding hidden gems.

The cathedral’s tower has one of the best views in the city, so make sure you leave time for the climb up the 325 steps as it is definitely worth it. After climbing up and down the tower, you will have worked up an appetite so head to Restaurant 17 for an amazing meal.

Direct from London Kings Cross to Durham takes roughly 3 hours.

Known for its medieval city walls, narrow streets, and the magnificent York Minster, York is a picturesque destination with a rich history in North Yorkshire. You can take a leisurely stroll along the walls and enjoy views of the city’s historic buildings and landmarks.

Kings Cross to York takes approximately 2 hours.

There are other stunning places in the UK of course, for example Cornwall, the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and the Scottish highlands to name just a few. But these are not walkable cities so don’t make our list. While you can get local buses and trains, it’s easier and better to explore by car at your own pace.
